Jupyter-Cloud: new storage, important information, a new outlook
In an effort to improve performance and reliability the service Jupyter-Cloud is receiving new storage right now.
The copying of user files has already been going on and is almost finished. The switch will be made once the copying is finished, hence a precise time cannot be scheduled but it will be either later today or during Saturday. The service will go into maintenance mode for 0.5-1h during this process.
Important information
Users are asked to take note of the following important information regarding the switch:
- all primary user data has been copying to the new storage over the past days and the process is almost complete
- excluded from the copying process were various types of cache files
-
as a consequence users who have installed additional software packages (through
pip, condaor other package managers) likely have to re-install them again when working from the new storage
Outlook
In addition to the new storage for Jupyter-Cloud the possibility to move to a different infrastructure has been investigated and prepared. While a few items still need to be worked out the prospect of moving Jupyter-Cloud to a Kubernetes infrastructure is now looking very possible and promises better performing, better scaling and additionally easier to maintain platform for this growing service with varying demands.
It is expected that the switch to the infrastructure is less invasive for users that the switch to the new storage or even seamless.
More news will be posted on this topic as the manifest themselves.
